Creating in the 814, Italian Food Festival This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, September 21 through Thursday, September 27.

Among the noteworthy live music happenings this weekend and upcoming week, the inaugural Cre814 Fest will bring local creations together on Saturday afternoon at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza. Various local arts and crafts vendors, local small businesses and a multitude of live musicians will present their creations starting at 1 p.m. The music will take place on three stages; see the listing below for the performers and start times. Admission to Cre814 Fest is free.

Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton presents their annual Italian Food Festival on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. As always, Italian food will be in the spotlight, with a wide variety of menu items to pick from via six different pavilions and tents. And Italian live music will grace diners, as New York City’s Micheal Castaldo and his band, the Strolling Faiellas (father and son duo) and 6-year-old opera singer Victory Brinker will perform through the afternoon. Admission to the festival is free.

Slavic music and cuisine will take center stage in Johnstown on Saturday afternoon, as the 4th annual Johnstown Slavic Festival happens at Johnstown’s Heritage Discovery Center. Admission is free. Visitors can experience Slavic and Hungarian food, Slavic arts and crafts, Slavic cooking demonstrations, a “World’s Best Nutroll” contest, and live Slavic music and entertainment from Ariana Lem Joy, Harmonia, Jadran Beaver Valley Junior Tamburitzens, and the West Philadelphia Orchestra. The festival begins at noon.

The annual Harmony Grange Fair near Westover wraps up this weekend. Rising Pittsburgh-based country performer Justin Fabus entertains on Friday night, while the Moore Brothers Band provides the music on Saturday.

Beyond fairs and festivals, McGarvey’s will present two returning noteworthy traveling groups this weekend and upcoming week. The Virginia-based Hackensaw Boys will bring their boisterous brand of bluegrass and string music fun to McGarvey’s on Friday night, with local favorites Mama Corn opening. And the boisterous fire-and-brimstone roots music sounds of Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band return to McGarvey’s on Wednesday evening. The Hoosier State (Indiana)-based group packed the house during their first visit to McGarvey’s in March. Local bluegrass/Americana group Black Ridge PABG will open the show, which starts at 7 p.m.

And for blues connoisseurs, Johnstown’s Black Cat Moan returns to the Altoona area on Saturday night to perform at the Altoona Grand Hotel. Singer and harmonica player T.K. Mundok, guitarist George Byich and northern Blair County’s Rob Bonsell on drums will present their distinctive brand of jazzy delta-styled blues originals and classics starting at 8 p.m.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
