Final Flight, Eric Sager Tribute, Brew-Grass and Benefits This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 8 through Thursday, June 14.

With the rise in summertime temperatures comes the rise in outdoor activity on the area music scene. And this weekend provides a lot of live music happenings, both outdoor and indoor.

Outdoors, the “Summer Sounds Concert Series” kicks off on Friday evening at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza, and while it marks the start of this summer’s concert series, it also marks the end of an era. The kickoff will feature the swan song of one of the Altoona area’s most popular rock bands over the past two decades, as Flight 19 performs their final public show. The “Party Plane” will park for good after this concert, which begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free. If you’re attending, don’t be surprised to see some Flight 19 alumni join in for the “Party Plane’s” last sojourn.

Also outdoors, the annual Patton Firemen’s Jubilee happens this weekend in downtown Patton. The carnival will feature fire-related competitions and events, children’s activities, food and refreshments, a parade on Saturday evening, and live music on both Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon. Night Train provides the music on Friday, while the Giants Of Science host a street party on Saturday night starting at 9 p.m. The Sharptones entertain on Sunday. Admission is free.

Indoors on Saturday night will be a special night remembering a former musician and friend of the area music scene, Eric Sager. Eric played bass for Ten Sent Wings, one of three bands who will reunite in his memory at the Four Dees Lounge. Also appearing will be the recently reunited and reformed Marauders, making their first Altoona appearance after announcing their reunion, and a reunion of State College punk rockers The Deuces. The fun starts at 10 p.m.

For bluegrass fans, the Blue Knob Clubhouse will host their inaugural “Brew-Grass Festival” on Saturday afternoon outdoors at the Clubhouse’s pavilion. Two area bluegrass favorites – Mountain City Grass and Mama Corn – will provide the entertainment. Food and refreshments will be available; admission is $5 per person.

Two benefit shows will take place indoors on Sunday afternoon. A dozen bands and performers will donate their musical talents toward the “Angela Beard Benefit Concert,” happening at the Arandale Elks Lodge. The music begins at 1 p.m. (for a list of performers, see the listing below); proceeds will help the family of Angela, a 16-month-old toddler whose life tragically ended last month.

And for those who are up for a roadtrip to Johnstown, the “Rawken for Hawken” benefit will take place at Slammin’ Sam’s in Moxham, and will raise funds to help out Brad Hawken. An area musician, sound and recording engineer who has provided production for numerous benefits himself, Brad was recently diagnosed and is being treated for colon-rectal cancer; proceeds from the benefit will help him with his medical and travel costs. A number of area bands and performers will donate their talents to the benefit, which starts at 4 p.m. – among them, a reunion of popular area hard rockers Lies, Inc., as well as popular metal rockers Inside Out, Darkness On The Radio and more. (See the listing below for the entire list of performers.)

And downtown Bedford will be be busy in the next several days with several events. On Saturday, Downtown Bedford, Inc. will present the annual Great Bedford Bed Races starting at 11 a.m. Following the races will be the “Wing Vs. Wing Wing-Off,” as several area eateries will put their best chicken wing recipes forward, with the public deciding the winners. Live music will be part of the wing feast, with Washington Slept Here and Coltt Lepley providing the music starting at 1 p.m. And Thursday marks the first “Hot Summer Nights” concert of the season along Penn Street and the downtown Square. D.D. & the Pubcrawlers will provide their blend of rock, funk, blues, ska, swing and more beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
