Dropping a Grenade This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, April 6 through Thursday, April 12.

Among live music highlights this weekend will be a CD-release show on Friday night at McGarvey’s, as Altoona-based nu-metal/heavy rockers Hate Grenade pull the pin on their second full-length album, called “The King Is Dead.” Founded in 2012, Hate Grenade has grown a following and a reputation for one of the area’s most incendiary live shows. Singer Jeff Glace, guitarist Chuck Lavera, drummer Mike Powers and the group’s newest member, bassist Donny D have forged an intense, agitated style of heavy modern rock/metal, with charging rhythms, aggressive, rap-edged vocals, and elements of hip-hop and even dubstep. The group issued their debut EP, “Reload,” in 2014, followed in the next year by their first full-length album, “Pull the Pin.” Hate Grenade will perform selections from the new album as well as tracks from the previous two recordings. Also performing at this show will be Johnstown-based nu-metal rockers Darkness On The Radio and Bedford County-based heavy hitters Paradigm. The show begins at 10:30 p.m.

McGarvey’s also hosts a unique show on Saturday night. “Emo/Punk Cover Night” will feature four local and regional bands, each performing a full cover set of an established band or artist. Altoona/Pittsburgh-based alternative rock group Young Lungs will perform a set of Blink 182 music, while Pittsburgh-based foursome Two Birds will cover Dashboard Confessional, Morgantown (West Virginia) rockers Forever Strong will salute Taking Back Sunday, and Altoona punk rock favorites X’s For Eyes will deliver a set of NOFX numbers. This show starts at 9 p.m.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
