A Big D**n Band Coming to Town!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, March 23 through Thursday, March 29.

Among the highlights during the coming week is a boisterous celebration of country blues and roots music coming to McGarvey’s on Wednesday night. From the state of Indiana, Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band will bring their blend of rowdy porch-styled blues and country, rooted in early Mississippi blues and inspired by such names as Blind Willie Johnson, Bukka White and T Model Ford. Namesake Rev. Josh Peyton on National guitar, harmonica, washboard and vocals, Breezy Peyton on washboard and vocals, and Maxwell Senteney on drums have built a reputation as an intense, high-energy band, with Rev. Peyton living each song and evoking evangelistic fury with his performance. Opening the show will be the return of the “King of the Cigar Box Guitar,” Shane Speal, and the Snakes. Brandishing a variety of cigar box guitars, Speal and his band will celebrate early roots blues music, plus give root-blues makeovers to some popular tunes as well. Wednesday’s show begins at 8 p.m.

If you still aren’t done with your Irish merrymaking from last weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities, McGarvey’s also hosts the return of Pittsburgh-based Irish punk-rocking favorites the Bastard Bearded Irishmen on Friday night, doing their brand of amped-up, high-velocity Irish music and drinking songs. Former Marauders frontman Ben Dumm and his East Side Band open the show, which starts at 10 p.m.

Area wine connoisseurs might gravitate toward the Hastings vicinity on Saturday afternoon, as the “Winefest” event takes place at the Hastings Memorial Building, with proceeds benefiting the Hastings Pool and Park. Some 20 different wineries and vendors will be available, and live music will be provided by Ed N’Born (two-thirds of popular area acoustic act Born & the Beanstalk, Sean Osborn and Ed Hofer) and the Nag Champions Mystery Band. Advance tickets are $20, and can be purchased at the Hastings Borough Office, or admission is $25 at the door; designated driver tickets of $5 will be available, and the first 100 guests receive a free wine tote bag. The event begins at 3 p.m.

And if you want to make the music yourself, Sunday afternoon offers two opportunities: the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective and Hollidaysburg Area Public Library host the monthly 4th Sunday Ukulele Jam at the Library, with a beginners’ ukulele session starting at 2 p.m., and the regular jam convening at 3 p.m.; admission is free and beginners are welcome. And if hitting a drum or dancing are more your passion, the Altoona West African Drum Circle convenes their weekly drum and dance session at 4 p.m. on the third floor of the Allegheny Ballet Company (adjacent to Railroad City Brewing Company on 11th Avenue in downtown Altoona). You may bring your own djembe or hand drum, or use drums that will be provided. Admission is free, and beginners are welcome. (Ring the buzzer at the Ballet Company entrance and you will be admitted.)

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
