Turning the Page…

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, Dec. 29 through Thursday, Jan. 4.

The page turns from 2017 into 2018, and live music will provide a backdrop for that transition, with plenty of New Year’s Eve events on the schedule.

One of the biggest celebrations happens in downtown State College, where First Night State College activities will take place Sunday afternoon and evening. See the listing below for music-related First Night events; for other First Night activities, visit the website https://firstnightstatecollege.com.

Besides the obvious New Year’s Eve party highlights, another noteworthy show this weekend will happen on Saturday night at the Four Dees Lounge. Popular area rock band Agent Smith has established a chameleonic persona since their beginnings, as they work with various musicians to transform into unique tribute band personas. This started in 2017 with their “Agent In Chains” tribute to Layne Staley-era Alice In Chains, and will continue on Saturday evening at the Four Dees with: Agent INXS. With guests Phil Steele joining on keys and Randy Rutherford playing saxophone, Agent Smith will devote one of their sets as a tribute to Michael Hutchence of INXS, marking the 20th anniversary of Hutchence’s passing in November, 1997. The guests will join singer Steve Oswalt, guitarist/singer Phil Wagner, bassist Mike Stanley and drummer Shawn Gioiosa in offering a ‘new sensation’ of INXS classics during their second set.

One more note: Effective in 2018, Rue Moyer’s weekly Thursday Open Stage Night will happen at a new location, moving from Railroad City Brewing Company to Greenbean Coffeehouse, 720 6th Avenue in Altoona. The start time for Open Stage is 6 p.m.

Have a safe and prosperous New Year 2018! And please resolve to SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC in 2018!

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.
