Patched Together, Bobaflex and Thanksgiving Live Music!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, Nov. 17 through Thursday, Nov. 23.

One of the largest annual benefit concerts makes its return this weekend, and live music will help usher in the Thanksgiving holiday in the coming week.

The benefit concert is the return of the annual Patched Together benefit on Saturday afternoon and evening, taking place at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society. “Patched Together: A Day of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch” will kick off at 2 p.m., and provide a variety of children’s activities, raffles, basket giveaways and prizes, food and refreshments, and live music. Proceeds from the event help out the Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch program, which provides counseling and mentoring services to young people and their families affected by the loss of loved ones. Eight area bands and performers will provide the music: Zach Wade & the Good Grief kicks things off at 2 p.m., followed by Nag Champions Mystery Band, Greg Burley, Stone Bridge Blues Band, The Sitch, Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors, The Chrome Hearts and Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band. Admission is $5 per person or the purchase of a Patched Together T-shirt. The event will last until 10 p.m.

Following appearances earlier in the week by influential punk rock group Swingin’ Utters on Tuesday and 1990s-era hard rockers Sponge on Thursday, McGarvey’s again welcomes national music and comedy acts to its stage on Saturday night. Comedian Don Jamieson, known for hosting “That Metal Show” on VH1 Classic from 2008 to 2015, will host a hard-rocking musical triple-bill featuring Bobaflex, Silvertung and The Opposition. Making their first-ever Altoona appearance, Bobaflex first surfaced from Huntington, West Virginia in 1998, formed by brothers Shawn and Martin McCoy, both descendants of the famous McCoy family of 1800s Hatfield-McCoy feud fame. They have recorded for several labels, including Eclipse, TVT and BFX/Megaforce, and recently issued their latest album, “Eloquent Demons.” Making their second McGarvey’s appearance, Baltimore’s Silvertung has scored three Billboard Mainstream Rock Radio hits in recent years, and last year issued their latest album, “Out of the Box,” via Pavement Entertainment. And opening the night will be the return of The Opposition, an Altoona-based band that has reformed after a decade away. According to frontman Mike Bryant, the group has an arsenal of new song material, reprising their hybrid blend of punk, funk, hip-hop and metal. Saturday’s show begins at 9 p.m.

The night before Thanksgiving is often one of the busiest nights for live music activity, as venues and patrons celebrate the arrival of the holiday. This year is no different, as numerous live music events throughout the area will hail in Thanksgiving Day. Check out the listing below for further details, and make live music a part of this years Thanksgiving festivities.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.
