Parrothead Fun, Swingin’ Utters and Sponge Coming to Town!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, Nov. 10 through Thursday, Nov. 16.

Fans of Jimmy Buffett music and tropical-themed fun will find plenty to celebrate during the third annual Park n Rock Benefit show, taking place Friday evening at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society. The fun starts at 6 p.m., with “Cousin Mike” Wieland performing at 6:15 p.m., and popular Pittsburgh-based Jimmy Buffett tribute performers Tom Watt & the Fruitcakes taking the stage at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door, and the public is welcome. Proceeds benefit the programs of the Central Blair Recreation Commission.

Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society will host a special Toys for Tots Auction on Saturday evening starting at 6 p.m., with the McCaulley Project – fronted by former popular Elvis impersonator Phil McCaulley – performing afterward. Donation at the door is $5 or a new, unwrapped toy.

McGarvey’s will host two nationally-known names during the coming week. Popular San Francisco-based punk rockers and Fat Wreck Cords recording group Swingin’ Utters performs at McGarvey’s on Tuesday evening. The group has been making music for more than 25 years, and has opened for such acts as Rancid, NOFX, Dropkick Murphys and more. Opening will be the group’s guitarist, Darius Koski, performing an acoustic set, along with Western Settings and Altoona punk rock favorites X’s For Eyes.

Two nights later, McGarvey’s will host 1990s hard rock hitmakers Sponge. Surfacing from Detroit, Sponge escalated to international acclaim with popular rock radio hits such as “Plowed,” “Molly (16 Candles),” “Wax Ecstatic” and more. The group achieved widespread radio airplay, heavy video rotation on MTV, performed on David Letterman’s and Conan O’Brian’s late-night television shows, and toured with such names as Kiss, Alice In Chains, Guns N’Roses, Iggy Pop, Nickelback, Soundgarden and more. The current edition of Sponge features remaining founding member and frontman Vinnie Dombroski, along with guitarists Kyle Neely and Andy Palatan, bassist Tim Palatan and drummer Billy Adams. The show starts at 7 p.m. with local favorites Zach Wade & the Good Grief opening. Tickets are still available through

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
