Rails and Ales, Pickin’ for Wishes and More This Weekend!
Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, Aug. 25 through Thursday, Aug. 31.
As the Summer of 2017 enters its homestretch, several annual late summer season event favorites highlight the live music schedule for the next seven days.
The annual Rails and Ales Brewfest convenes at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum on Saturday afternoon, raising proceeds for Altoona Community Theatre. A number of local and regional craft brewers will present more than 80 of their beer creations to sample. And craft brew enthusiasts can enjoy live music before and during the event as well; two-thirds of Born and the Beanstalk – Ed n’Born – will entertain during the special VIP session beginning at 4 p.m., while Johnstown folk-rock trio The Crew Of The Half Moon and local brass rocking favorites D.D. & the Pub Crawlers will entertain during the public Brewfest session, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Attendees to Rails and Ales must be age 21 or older. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate.
The fifth annual Pickin’ for Wishes bluegrass festival happens this weekend at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club, raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. The music starts on Friday night with Johnstown-based bluegrass/Celtic folk favorites Tree performing at 5:30 p.m. The music then resumes at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, with performances from Marv Ashby & High Octane, Mountain City Grass, Mama Corn and The Hillbilly Gypsies. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the gate.
The inaugural Cove Food Truck Festival will take place on Saturday at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park in Martinsburg. A variety of food truck vendors will offer food and drink selections; also featured will be a cruise-in/car show, children’s activities, and live music from local folk duo Rob Berkheimer and Miles Lanborn beginning at noon. Admission is free.
The Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society in Altoona will host Freedom Fest on Sunday afternoon, raising funds for Disabled American Veterans. The event is sponsored by Miss Southwestern Pennsylvania, Anna Oberneder and is open to the public. Country will be the prominent musical flavor of the day, with 100 Proof performing at 3:30 p.m., followed by Ricky Lee at 6 p.m. A basket raffle will also take place, and food and refreshments will be available. Donation is $10 per person.
And local dance-rock favorites Shallow 9 will take to the high seas of Lake Raystown on Sunday afternoon for their Sunday Funday Boat Cruise aboard the Proud Mary riverboat. The fun begins with a picnic under a pavilion at 1 p.m., with the boat leaving dock at 5 p.m. This event is sold out; however, Shallow 9 will host a second Sunday Funday Boat Cruise event on September 10, and tickets for that cruise may be purchased from band members.
For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.
Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
