Concerts, Festivals and Punx For Pets!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 16 through Thursday, June 22.

Father’s Day weekend features plenty of live music, including outdoor and indoor concerts, festivals and other fun live music events.

The Railroaders Museum hosts the second installment of their “Alive @ 5” Summer Concert Series on Friday evening, with Motley Crue tribute band Motley 2 and Backlash. The show begins at 6 p.m. Based in Huntingdon County, Backlash this year marks its tenth anniversary as a band; bassist/singer Dan McCorkle, guitarists/singers Buck Dickson and Wade Shumaker, and drummer/singer Mike Simone will provide a mix of classic and modern rock favorites.

Local and regional punk rock-based acts will pool their talents to help the animals at the Central PA Humane Society on Saturday afternoon. An all-ages show, “Punx For Pets” kicks off at 4 p.m. Several touring punk groups will be part of the bill, including Boston’s Doc Hopper, New Jersey’s Mikey Erg (of The Ergs), and Pittsburgh’s A Lovely Crisis. Also performing will be York’s Olde Tigers, local favorites X’s For Eyes and Railroad City Murder Machines, and two up-and-coming acts from the Altoona area, The Cassettes and the debut of Dave Hates Everything. Donation is $8/person.

For festival action, South Fork Heritage Days happens this weekend, with activities, food and entertainment happening in and around South Fork. Live music will happen throughout the event; see the listing below for more information.

And on Thursday, the rumble of motorcycle thunder will intensify as several motorcycle events happen throughout Cambria County, including the annual Thunder In The Valley motorcycle rally in Johnstown, ABATE-sponsored bike fests, and the 13th annual Wheels & Wings festivities in downtown Ebensburg. More details on next weekend’s activities in next week’s blog.

For bluegrass fans up for a roadtrip, the annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival happens this weekend at Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork, north of Renovo. Set in the wilderness of the PA Wilds, the festival offers four days of music, workshops, food and refreshments. Performers include traveling national and regional bluegrass and folk acts, as well as local representatives Mama Corn, Huntingdon native Doug Forshey (now based in Nashville), Grain and others. In addition, the Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest winners will be presented, and will perform their winning song entries about Pennsylvania, its history, people and places. Smoked Country Jam began on Wednesday evening, and continues through Saturday night.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
