Festivals, Celebrations and Concerts Abound This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 9 through Thursday, June 15.

Outdoor live music gets busier in coming days, with more festivals, concerts and other outdoor events featuring live music in the region.

A few communities are celebrating anniversaries this weekend, with live music as part of those festivities. Summerhill Borough in Cambria County marks their 125th anniversary with festivities on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. A performer bearing the community’s name, Steve Summerhill, kicks off the music Friday, followed by Three Of Hearts. Saturday’s performers include KB & the Crew, Jill & Leah Gontkovic and Shades Of June, while Rosie & the Jammers wraps up the music polka-style on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Huntingdon celebrates their 250th anniversary with festivities throughout the town on Saturday. Among the performers are Dan & Galla with a childrens’ party in early afternoon, and new area bluegrass/roots music group Crooked Line later in the day.

Bedford will be busy with several activities on Saturday, featuring live music as part of the festivities. The Great Bedford Bed Race, where entrants race beds down Julianna Street, happens starting at 11 a.m., followed by the Chicken Wing Square Off at 1 p.m., with area eateries presenting their best wings and competing for top honors. Local acoustic favorite Kenny Fetterman provides music during this event. Later, Bedford Speedway presents Bedford Race & Rock, combining auto racing with live music. The bands Seize Fire, The Chrome Hearts, Star Sixty-Nine and Karmaworks provide the music, which starts at 6 p.m.

The 11th annual Day Of Rock benefit concert/festival takes place Saturday at the Saxton Sportsmen Pavilion near Saxton, and will feature a slate of local and regional performers. This year’s line-up includes Rick Ramsey & Co., Hawestone, Downshift, Teazed, Late Last Nite, Bone Jacked, Backlash, DD & the Pubcrawlers and Urban Myth. The music starts at noon. The event is open to folks ages 21 and older. Proceeds benefit the We Care Foundation.

Downtown Altoona’s Summer Sounds Concert Series launches their season on Friday evening with local dance party favorites Shallow 9 performing. Led by singer Erika Marino, Shallow 9 blends classic and modern rock and pop hits, including plenty of songs that dance-happy fans can ‘cut the rug’ to. Admission is free, and food and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Down To The Wire kicks off the concert season at Valley View Amphitheater on Sunday evening starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free, and those attending are invited to bring along a lawn chair or blanket.

Hollidaysburg’s Downtown Live! Concert Series continues on Thursday evening on The Diamond, with Rokkandy providing their mix of classic rock and hits. The concert starts at 6 p.m., and admission is free. Bring your own seating.

If you weren’t able to attend The Clarks’ performance at the Altoona’s Railroaders Museum last weekend, the group returns to the region on Saturday evening to headline Rock For A Cure at Tussey Mountain Amphitheater near Boalsburg. This fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will feature children’s activities, food and refreshments, and live music from The Clarks, with opening acts Fyre, Echoes Never Lie and Biscuit Jam. Advance tickets are available for $20/adults and $10/children under 12; admission at the gate will be $25/adults and $12/children.

For those who want to get their hand drumming in, two opportunities happen this weekend. Former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan & Friends host a free community drum circle event on Saturday evening at the Boilerhouse on the campus of St. Francis University in Loretto, which starts at 7 p.m. And Camara Drum & Dance continues to host their weekly Sunday afternoon West African Drum Circle event at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza, starting at 4 p.m. Both drum circle events are free to attend, and all skill levels from beginners to longtime drumming enthusiasts are welcome to attend.

For those in need of their ukulele jamming fix, the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective hosts their Second Sunday Ukulele Jam on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at Catalyst Space in downtown Altoona. Admission is free, although donations are accepted to help the Kollective provide events throughout the year.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
