Memorial Day Weekend Live Music!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, May 26 through Thursday, June 2.

The Memorial Day holiday weekend features several noteworthy live music events throughout the region.

An Altoona area music scene all-star cast will bring to life “It Was 50 Years Ago Today,” a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles’ milestone “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, on Friday evening at the historic Mishler Theatre. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. With musical direction by Rick Wertz, the show will feature performances from Aislinn Feathers, Will Jones, David Misera, Steve Oswalt, Tyne Palazzi, Matt Pletcher, Allegheny Ballet Company, and The Altitude Rock Ensemble. Narration will be provided by Beatles scholar and award-winning author Ken Womack, who wrote the 2007 book “Long and Winding Roads,” a detailed study about the artistry of The Beatles. Tickets are sold out for the event, which is presented by P&J Productions and Altitude Entertainment.

Legends Of Rock Productions will present a celebration of 1970s and 1980s era rock at the Blair County Convention Center on Saturday night. Performing will be several frontmen for prominent bands of that era: Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Jon Elefante (who replaced Steve Walsh as Kansas’ lead singer in the early 1980s), and Kevin Chalfant (one of Steve Perry’s replacements in Journey). The backing band for the three singers will be longtime Pennsylvania rock favorites Hybrid Ice, who back various classic rock singers and musicians annually during their Legends Of Rock Caribbean Cruise. Tickets are $30, $40 and $50 per person, and additional $20 meet and greet passes are available; tickets can be purchased at the Convention Center box office.

One of several towns that lays claim to the birthplace of Memorial Day, Boalsburg will host its annual Memorial Day celebration on Monday, with events happening throughout the town. Live music will be a part of it, with performers taking the stage on the downtown Diamond, at Boal Mansion and elsewhere. See the listing below for more details.

And Hollidaysburg’s Downtown Live! Concert Series will try it again this week. Rainy weather forced the kickoff concert with Felix & the Hurricanes to be postponed until this Thursday evening, starting at 6 p.m. on The Diamond. Admission is free, and attendees are invited to bring chairs.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead and make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
