An Acoustic Weekend…

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, March 3 through Thursday, March 9.

Acoustic music seems to be the prominent flavor on the area music scene for this weekend and upcoming week, as a number of acoustic-geared solo performers and groups will take the area stages.

Among the “unplugged” highlights…Dreadnot – the duo of former Front alumni Bobby Gates and John McKelvey – return to action on Friday evening at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub, starting at 6 p.m….John McKelvey’s former electric bandmates, Flight 19, bring their acoustic incarnation to the Cesar Battisti in Altoona On Friday night starting at 8 p.m….Former Kyx guitarist Bill Ferrell – who has evolved into an impressive fingerstyle guitar specialist – entertains at Railroad City Brewing Company in downtown Altoona starting at 7 p.m. Friday evening…State College acoustic duo Hops & Vines – pairing singer Christy Clancy with guitarist Jonathan McVerry – bring their acoustic rock and pop mixture to the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg starting at 6 p.m. Friday evening…And McGarvey’s presents an acoustic weekend, with local favorites Born & the Beanstalk on Friday night, and Johnstown’s The Crew Of The Half Moon on Saturday night. Both shows start at 10 p.m.

Although the keyboard will be plugged in, Stormy – the duo of singer Mark Montrella and keyboardist Charlie Leiden – entertain at the Brookmere Winery location near the Altoona Grand Hotel (former Ramada) on Saturday evening starting at 6 p.m.

And for music fans looking for something to check out on Sunday, the Derek Burr Family Benefit will take place on Sunday afternoon at the new Chewy’s Pizza in Altoona starting at 2 p.m. The benefit will raise money to help with funeral costs for the family of Derek, a 13-year-old Hopewell youngster who lost his life in a January ATV accident. The show will feature performances from the bands Texas Whiskey Authority, Bone Jacked, 100 Proof, Agent Smith and the debut of a new Altoona-based band, Urban Myth. Donation at the door is $5 per person, which includes the music and food.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
