Looking for a Cabin Fever Cure This Weekend?

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, January 13 through Thursday, January 19.

If you are seeking a cure to your cabin fever this weekend, numerous live music options are available on local and regional stages.

Saturday night is particularly busy in the Altoona area, with a number of area favorites on local stages. Flight 19 is at the Four Dees Lounge, R2B2 is at Family Pizza, Railroad City Murder Machines with guests Ed n’Born (actually, two-thirds of Born & the Beanstalk) is at McGarvey’s, Felix & the Hurricanes is at Hollidaysburg’s Old Canal Inn, and Bone Jacked ushers in live music at Chewy’s Pizza (formerly the Monkey Wharf) in Altoona. And as 30 Something has turned the page into the new Club Kryptonite in 2017, the expanded electric incarnation of acoustic 80s rockers Teazed brings their full firepower to the Kryptonite stage. Starting last spring as the acoustic trio of singer Justin Dell, guitarists Jason Berardi and Jim Mincin, Teazed recently expanded into a full-blown rock quintet with the additions of bassist Mike Stanley and drummer Shawn Gioiosa. The group will celebrate the electric 1980s hair-band era, with numbers from Poison, Def Leppard, Guns N’Roses and many more.

If you missed their CD-release shindig last weekend, local bluegrassers Mama Corn will continue the celebration of the release of their third CD, “Live and Learn,” when they entertain skiers and “Corn-stalkers” at the Blue Knob Clubhouse on Saturday afternoon. The group will do songs from the new album plus other favorites from their first two CD’s, and some surprise bluegrass takes on non-bluegrass numbers are always a possibility as well.

If you’re looking for some live music to chase the Pittsburgh Steelers’ playoff clash with Kansas City on Sunday afternoon, head to the Thirsty Dawg Taverne in Patton, where Jerry Carnicella, Bob Helbig and the Beatlemaniacs will whoop it up following the game with their celebration of the hits of the Fab Four, plus other 1960s and 1970s hits as well. The music starts at 4 p.m.

And under-the-radar Americana favorites Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band will return to the area on Thursday evening, performing during the first “Pizza Galore” celebration of the New Year at Horn O’Plenty Farm-to-Table Restaurant in Bedford. Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band (actually Megan’s husband, Byrne Klay) will fire up their rebellious, rowdy brand of Americana sounds, mixing elements of bluegrass, folk, punk rock, old-timey and dance music flavors. This group has toured throughout the eastern U.S., has been featured on PBS, and has grown a strong local following with their appearances at the Wills Mountain Festival in recent years. The music begins at 6 p.m., and Horn O’Plenty will accompany the music with a pizza buffet. Admission is $15 for both the music and buffet, or $5 for just the music.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
