Homecoming with Josh This Weekend!
Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, January 27 through Thursday, February 2.
A major highlight of this weekend’s live music slate is the area return of Cresson favorite son and country artist Josh Gallagher after his recent run on NBC-TV’s popular talent search program “The Voice.” After advancing to the final episode and finishing fourth overall, Josh brings his ‘voice’ and band to Altoona’s historic Mishler Theatre for two sold-out shows on Saturday. The matinee performance begins at 3 p.m., and the nightcap concert starts at 7:30 p.m., with a private meet-and-greet session in between.
Other highlights during this weekend and upcoming week include two benefit events. A fundraiser to help out the family of local hardcore musician Jay Champeno will take place on Saturday evening at The Anvil in Altoona. The benefit starts at 6 p.m., with performances from the bands Menace, Dementor, No Good Deed, Deadside and Into the Storm. The show is open to all ages, and donation is $10 at the door. Proceeds will help pay medical expenses for Jay, who was recently stricken with a blood infection and other health issues.
The fourth installment of “Sips and Snacks in the Snacks” will take place on Saturday evening at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library. A fundraiser for the library, “Sips and Snacks” will feature wine-tasting, a variety of snacks, and live music from Raining Blue and Ron “Music Man” Balestino. The event starts at 7 p.m., and donation is $20/person.
McGarvey’s in Altoona will present a showcase of New York-based musical talent on Friday night. The show will feature three different groups: Elmira-based rock duo Supermassive, Horseheads-based heavy/progressive rock foursome The Waking Sea, and Corning-based rock/funk quintet The Rocky Burning Band. The show starts at 10 p.m.
And the public is welcome to break up their Monday doldrums with some live electric blues and blues-rock at Penn State Altoona’s Slep Center when Baltimore’s Reggie Wayne Morris Band returns to the campus for a free performance. The show will begin at noon at the campus’ Slep Student Center. This will be the group’s second visit to Penn State Altoona after first performing there last February. During Monday’s performance, the group will welcome Penn State Altoona student Ikechi Onyenaka to join in on saxophone.
Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
