Feeling the Heat in Bedford!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, January 20 through Thursday, January 26.

One of the weekend’s highlights happens in Bedford on Saturday, with the annual “Feel the Heat” Chili and Soup Cookoff. Seven downtown Bedford businesses will host chili and soup tasting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with numerous area restaurants, taverns and eateries offering a wide variety of soups and chilis to sample and vote on. Wristbands are being sold to visitors who wish to taste and judge the entries; the cost is $15 per person in advance, and $20 per person on Saturday. Each of the seven tasting locations will provide live acoustic music from various Bedford area performers; see the listing below for the full list of performers.

Other area music highlights this weekend include a special acoustic triple-bill at McGarvey’s on Friday night, featuring the duo of Rik Golden and Rick Ramsey, the acoustic incarnation of State College punk rock favorites The Whatleys, and Derek Gresh, who will perform selections from his new band project, Nag Champions. The music begins at 10 p.m.

Several favorites grace area stages on Saturday night, including popular new group Agent Smith at Family Pizza & Pub, Shallow 9 at the Four Dees Lounge, The Chrome Hearts at Hollidaysburg’s Old Canal Inn, a punk rocking triple-bill at McGarvey’s featuring Xs for Eyes, The Snips and The Flannels, and more.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home safely.
