The Gallows, The Strayer Benefit, and Lil’ Rev Returns!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, November 11 through Thursday, November 17.

Several noteworthy events highlight this week’s slate. Detroit, Michigan favorites The Goddamn Gallows bring their high-energy blend of Americana, bluegrass, punk, metal and the kitchen sink back to McGarvey’s on Saturday night, headlining a five-band bill happening on two stages. Also performing will be Winchester, Virginia’s Gallows Bound, Richmond, Virginia’s Creep-a-Zoids, Pittsburgh’s 6 Speed Kill and local punk rockers Xs For Eyes. The music starts at 9 p.m.

Also on Saturday, eastern Ohio-based doom rockers Doctor Smoke return to 30 Something, headlining a triple-bill. Also performing will be Rochester, New York-based female power trio Fox 45 and Pittsburgh’s Serpent Lord. The show begins at 9 p.m.

Area musicians and the community will help out Megan Strayer and her family on Sunday afternoon during a benefit concert at the Unter Uns Musical and Entertainment Society. The Strayer Benefit starts at 1 p.m., and will feature a spaghetti dinner, basket and prize raffles, 50/50’s, and live music from six area bands. Donation at the door is $15/person, which includes the dinner and music. For more information on the bands performing, see the listing below.

Penn State Altoona features a busy musical slate in the coming week. On Monday evening, the campus’ emerging artist in residence, Dan Shevock, will present a free jazz performance at the Misciagna Family Center of Performing Arts. A vibrophone player, Shevock will provide inventive arrangements on a variety of material, spanning Duke Ellington to Kurt Cobain to Bill Withers, and even include music inspired by Paul Winter. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., and admission is free.

On Tuesday evening, Andean-flavored music will fill Penn State Altoona’s Slep Student Center when the Mystic Warriors perform. Formed in 1994, the Rockville, Maryland-based group will merge Andean music with elements of new age, jazz, Latin, and popular mainstream music. The concert starts at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

And multi-instrumentalist Lil’ Rev returns to perform at Penn State Altoona’s Slep Student Center on Thursday evening. The Milwaukee native – who has authored several ukulele instruction books in the Hal Leonard series – will perform on ukulele, harmonica and other instruments, share American music history and showcase a blend of music spanning folk, ragtime, blues, Americana and other forms of traditional music. The two-set concert begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for students presenting their Penn State ID, and $15/person for the general public.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
